Project Description

Insulation upgrades Arklow

The house was constructed in 2001, it received attic and cavity insulation work under the SEAI grant application. The owner took advantage of the discount SABER insulation offers for homeowners to install both the attic and cavity insulation while we are on the premises. The discount can be offered as both installations can be done on the same day.

As the house was constructed in 2001, this meant it was eligible for the SEAI BEH grant for the walls and Attic. The cavity walls had 50mm polyestyrne already in place and a 50mm cavity (void) which SABER insulation filled with bonded bead insulation. This increased the insulation in the cavity wall to 100mm. After every hole is drilled and filled with bead and glue, we fill the holes with white plaster, which we then paint to match the existing house.

The holes have been filled and painted in the picture above, as can be sen we provide a good colour match.

Attic Insulation

The home owner also wanted their attic insulated. This consisted of topping up the the attic with 200mm of earthwool insulation. The attic now has 300mm insulation in place which brings the U-value down to 0.16. All new houses are consttructed with 300mm in  place now. A set of walk boards are put in place to allow the home owner walk over to the water tanks.

We specially make our own walk boards which consist of 19mm ply and 100mm polyiso insulation bonded together. The walk boards are placed on 4×2 timbers for support and drilled together with 150mm screws, which provides a secure and level walking surface.

All the attic pipes are lagged with 19mm walled pipe lagging, this is to ensure that freezing of the water does not occur. The Attic water tanks are insulated with specially made insulated tank jackets.

Each attic hatch is insulated with polyiso insulation and sealed with an airtight seal to ensure that no additional wind enters the house through the attic hatch. The attic insulation work is fully audted to ensure that the qualtity of work complies with SEAI energy grants.

The grant applications for this insulation project in Arklow amounted to €600, we deducted this from the homeowners quotation. As we apply for the better energy grant for the home owner we also provide a free BER for the house after the work has been completed.

This house BER rating increased form a C3 to a C1 and there was a 2 year payback on fuel savings after the insulation work was complete.
